On a tragic Friday morning in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the life of 26-year-old Tanieshia Killough Butler, a female student at Louisiana Technical College, was cut short in a sudden and senseless act of violence. On February 8, 2008, Butler was in her second-floor classroom with about 20 other students when a fellow student, 23-year-old Latina Williams, entered the room.
After a brief interaction with the instructor, Williams left, only to re-enter moments later through another door, armed with a. 357-caliber revolver.
In a horrifying turn of events that unfolded around 8:30 a.m., Williams opened fire, fatally shooting Butler and another student, 21-year-old Karsheika Graves. The motive for the shooting remained a mystery to investigators, who could find no connection between Williams and the two women she targeted. Following the shooting of her classmates, Williams then turned the gun on herself, ending her own life in the classroom. The entire incident was a murder-suicide that left the campus and the community in shock.
Police who arrived on the scene within minutes of the first 911 call described a scene of chaos, with people running in panic. Inside the classroom, they found the three women deceased. Investigators later determined that Williams had purchased the firearm and ammunition from a New Orleans pawn shop just the day before the shooting.
