In the summer of 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the afternoon quiet on Townsley Street in Baton Rouge, leaving two people dead. One of the victims was Robin Rena Hayes, a 52-year-old woman. On June 27th, she and a man named Joseph Profit were shot in a violent encounter that would ultimately claim both of their lives.
Emergency services were called to the scene around 4:20 p.m. where they found Profit, 48, had died from multiple gunshot wounds.
Hayes was gravely injured and rushed to a local hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, she succumbed to her injuries. The incident was investigated by Baton Rouge Police Homicide Detectives as a double homicide.
For several weeks, the investigation into the killings of Hayes and Profit continued. Then, on September 19, 2023, authorities announced a significant development in the case. Detectives arrested 37-year-old Derrick Coleman for his alleged involvement in the fatal shooting. Coleman was taken into custody without incident and booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He is facing serious charges, including two counts of first-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.
