Lorrie Ann Hayden, a 53-year-old White/Caucasian female, tragically lost her life on the evening of April 27, 2024, in a violent shooting in the Park Hill neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky. A compassionate and dedicated licensed practical nurse, she was remembered for her kind-hearted nature and her love for gardening. She had a special place in her heart for children and had raised her niece as her own daughter.
On that Saturday evening, around 9:30 p.m., Louisville Metro Police
responded to a call in the 1700 block of West Ormsby Avenue. Upon arrival, they discovered Lorrie and an 80-year-old man, James Jones, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, both victims were pronounced dead at the scene. The incident was quickly determined to be a double homicide.
The investigation into the murders pointed to a former boyfriend of Lorrie's with whom she had a tumultuous and violent history. Her family revealed that the relationship had been abusive for a couple of years, marked by severe beatings, stabbings, and broken bones that had previously hospitalized her for multiple surgeries. Despite a protective order against him, which he had violated several times, the ex-boyfriend had managed to track her down to the home on West Ormsby Street. It is believed that James Jones, the landlord of the property, was shot and killed when he tried to intervene.
In the days following the murders, the Louisville Metro Police Department identified the ex-boyfriend as a person of interest. When officers attempted to make contact with him, the suspect fatally shot himself. While his death brought a close to the manhunt, Lorrie's family expressed mixed emotions, with some feeling that justice had not been fully served as they had hoped to see him held accountable in court. Her son voiced that he believed law enforcement could have done more to protect his mother, suggesting that if the suspect had been kept in prison for his previous violations, the tragedy might have been averted.
