In the spring of 2023, the city of Louisville, Kentucky, was shaken by a tragic event that claimed the life of 57-year-old Deana Eckert, a dedicated executive administrative officer at the Old National Bank. A valued employee for over six years, Eckert was known for her kindness and thoughtful nature, a woman who found joy in pouring love into her friends and family.
On the morning of April 10, 2023, a coworker, 25-year-old Connor Sturgeon, opened fire within the bank's downtown
location. The attack was sudden and violent, leaving a scene of chaos and tragedy. Eckert was critically injured during the assault and was rushed to the hospital. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries, she succumbed to her injuries later that day, becoming the fifth fatality in the mass shooting. Four other bank employees, Joshua Barrick, 40; Thomas Elliott, 63; Juliana Farmer, 45; and James Tutt, 64, also lost their lives in the attack.
The gunman, who livestreamed the horrific event, was killed by responding police officers during a shootout. While the motive for the shooting remains a subject of investigation, it was reported that the gunman was a bank employee. The incident also left eight others wounded, including two police officers. The community was left to mourn the senseless loss of life, remembering Deana Eckert and the other victims for their contributions to their families and the city of Louisville.
