In the early hours of May 6, 2023, a shooting shattered the peace at the Red Mill Apartments on the far east side of Indianapolis. When officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the complex, located near 38th Street and Franklin Road, shortly after 2:20 a.m., they discovered two young victims of gunfire. One of them was Nicholas Powell, an 18-year-old Black male.
Nicholas was pronounced dead at the scene from his injuries.
Alongside him, another teenager, 17-year-old Jhavon Fisher, was also found with gunshot wounds. Fisher was rushed to a nearby hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life, but he later succumbed to his injuries. The incident was a double homicide that took the lives of two young men.
Homicide detectives were called to the scene to begin the arduous process of piecing together what had transpired. Investigators began speaking with potential witnesses, hoping to uncover a motive for the deadly shooting and identify who was responsible for pulling the trigger. Despite their efforts, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects in the case.
