Fotiukia Machi Scott, an 18-year-old Black man, was caught in sudden violence on the east side of the Indianapolis area on the night of Sunday, June 11, 2023. Just after 9 p.m., Cumberland Metropolitan Police were dispatched to reports of a person shot near Taftwood Drive and Wickerwood Drive, in the vicinity of the Knoll Ridge Townhomes and Apartments and the 500 block of Wickerwood Drive.
When officers arrived within minutes, they found Scott suffering from at least one gunshot wound, reported as being to the upper torso, and began emergency aid while waiting for medics to take over.
He was rushed from the scene to an Indianapolis hospital in critical condition. For two days, the outcome was uncertain, but on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, he died from the injuries he sustained in the shooting. Early information released by investigators described evidence at the scene suggesting that shots were fired from more than one firearm, hinting at a volley rather than a single shot, yet the public details stopped there—no clear explanation for why gunfire erupted, and no official narrative about what led up to the moment Scott was found wounded.
In the days that followed, authorities said they had not released information about a suspect, a possible motive, or any arrests connected to the killing. Instead, the investigation leaned on community leads, with police urging anyone who knew what happened—or who saw or heard something in the moments surrounding the shooting—to come forward through Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana.
Away from the police tape and evidence markers, arrangements were made to remember him. An obituary published through Williams & Bluitt Funeral Home noted that Scott was from McCordsville, Indiana, and listed a public visitation and a celebration of life service scheduled for June 24, 2023, at the funeral home’s Peoples’ Chapel on East 38th Street in Indianapolis—an attempt to gather family and friends into one room after the quick, bewildering shift from a Sunday night emergency call to a Tuesday death notification.
