Timothy Lenges, a 41-year-old White male, was a resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, known for his mechanical skills and independent spirit. A graduate of the Indiana School for the Deaf, he was self-employed and owned a motorcycle shop where he could pursue his passion for cars, mopeds, and motorcycles. He was described by those who knew him as a fun-loving individual who enjoyed the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing, and had a deep affection for animals, including his Great Dane.
On the evening of August 20, 2014, tragedy struck at his home in the 6100 block of East 32nd Street on the east side of Indianapolis. His teenage daughter arrived at the residence only to discover her father unresponsive. Emergency responders were called to the scene, where they found Lenges dead from a gunshot wound to the chest. The discovery marked a violent end to the life of a man who was well-regarded by his family and community.
Detectives from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation, but they immediately encountered unique hurdles. Because Lenges was deaf, a significant portion of his social circle and potential witnesses were also members of the deaf community. This presented a logistical challenge for investigators, who struggled to conduct timely interviews without the constant aid of interpreters.
