On what should have been a joyous celebration of his third birthday, Armonie Xavier Booker's life was tragically cut short on August 26, 2024, in Indianapolis, Indiana. The young male was the innocent victim of a double homicide that also claimed the life of 22-year-old Jaishawn Darell Johnson. The two were inside a car at a shopping center in the 7300 block of North Shadeland Avenue when they were fatally shot.
The devastating event unfolded in the evening, leaving a community in
mourning and a family shattered. An off-duty Lawrence police officer was the first to discover the grim scene, finding both Armonie and Johnson with gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention and being rushed to a children's hospital, the three-year-old succumbed to his injuries. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. In the wake of the tragedy, family and friends gathered for vigils to remember the spirited little boy who loved Spider-Man, riding his bike, and playing basketball. His father, Arieon Anderson, spoke of his son as a 'world of joy' and the light of their lives.
For months, the family pleaded for justice, urging anyone with information to come forward. Their prayers were answered in November 2024, when the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department announced the arrest of 22-year-old William Paschall-Young in connection with the killings. Homicide detectives utilized surveillance footage from a liquor store which reportedly showed Paschall-Young walking towards the vehicle occupied by Johnson and Armonie before firing several shots. Facial recognition technology and tips from the community aided in his identification. Further evidence, including shell casings from the crime scene, allegedly matched bullets that Paschall-Young had purchased in July. His arrest during a traffic stop brought a sense of relief to Armonie's grieving family, who expressed their gratitude that he could finally rest in peace.
