In the early morning hours of September 10, 2022, Abdukadir Filanwaa, a 55-year-old Somali-American man, was found shot to death in his yellow minivan taxi in Indianapolis. A 911 caller reported that the cab had been parked near 11th and New Jersey streets for a prolonged period with its doors open and the engine still running. When officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's Downtown District arrived shortly after 4 a.m., they discovered Filanwaa in the driver's seat.
Medics pronounced him dead at the scene. He had been a taxi driver in the city for over two decades, known by colleagues as a polite and friendly man who would give you the shirt off his back. Having fled Somalia for a safer life in America, he had worked for about 25 years to provide for his family.
The investigation into Filanwaa's death quickly led to two suspects, 30-year-old James Riley and 29-year-old Alysianna Martin, who were arrested just days after the incident. A crucial piece of evidence was the security camera footage from inside the taxi. The video allegedly showed Riley and Martin getting into the cab at a Greyhound bus station. During the ride, Riley reportedly pulled out a gun, pushed it into Filanwaa's side, and ordered him to drive. The recording captured Riley asking about the camera's location and saying, 'You think I'm playing do you want to die?'. An argument over $20 also reportedly occurred before the cab stopped, and Riley allegedly shot Filanwaa multiple times.
Following their arrests, both suspects faced the judicial system. James Riley pleaded guilty to murder and kidnapping and was sentenced to 62 years in prison. Alysianna Martin pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and received a 30-year prison sentence. The swift arrests and subsequent convictions brought a measure of justice to a community shaken by the violent death of a man who had sought refuge and a better life in their city. His death resonated deeply among fellow taxi drivers and the local Muslim community, who mourned the loss of a hardworking and respected member.
