In the early morning hours of June 25, 2023, a vibrant night out in the Broad Ripple entertainment district of Indianapolis turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy, forever altering the lives of several families. Among the victims was 22-year-old Kaleyia Preer, a young woman whose life was cut short in a senseless act of gun violence. The incident, which also claimed the lives of 24-year-old Tywain Henning and 22-year-old Christopher Lee Wilson Jr., sent shockwaves through the community and
left a fourth individual wounded.
The events leading up to the fatal shooting began as tensions escalated between different groups of people in the bustling neighborhood. According to Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears, a significant amount of alcohol consumption and the presence of numerous firearms contributed to a volatile atmosphere that ultimately erupted into a physical altercation. In the midst of this chaos, multiple gunshots rang out, creating widespread panic and leaving a devastating aftermath.
The investigation into the triple homicide quickly focused on identifying the individual or individuals responsible for the gunfire. Eyewitness accounts and the collection of firearm evidence from the scene proved crucial in leading investigators to a suspect. Through forensic testing, evidence was linked to a Glock pistol belonging to 24-year-old Kara Hinds. Witnesses reported that just before the shooting began, someone had punched Hinds in the back of the head, and she allegedly turned around and started firing. While it was reported that both Henning and Wilson were also armed, the chaotic nature of the event made it unclear if others had discharged their weapons.
In October 2023, authorities arrested Kara Hinds in connection with the deadly shooting. She faced a series of serious charges, including two counts of murder, one count of reckless homicide, two counts of battery, and a criminal recklessness charge. During an interview with investigators in late September, Hinds claimed that she felt she was acting in self-defense. Despite this claim, the case proceeded to trial, where a jury convicted her on two counts of murder, one count of reckless homicide, and one count of criminal recklessness. In a subsequent sentencing hearing in September 2025, a judge handed down a sentence of 113 years in prison for her role in the deaths of Kaleyia Preer, Tywain Henning, and Christopher Lee Wilson Jr.
