On the night of September 23, 2024, 17-year-old Marquise Jermaine Witherspoon from Bessemer, Alabama, was fatally shot in Fairfield. The incident occurred around 10:38 p.m. in the 300 block of 67th Street. Upon arrival, deputies discovered Witherspoon inside a residence, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was promptly transported to UAB Hospital by Fairfield Fire & Rescue but succumbed to his injuries at 11:21 p.m.
