On a tragic day in April 2020, Yana Orr, a 31-year-old woman, lost her life in a senseless act of violence at a gas station on the east side of Indianapolis. Orr was a graduate of Richmond High School and was pursuing a nursing degree at Ivy Tech. Known for her vibrant personality and dedication to her family, she was attempting to help her sister and her sister's children escape a hostile domestic situation.
The confrontation escalated when Orr's sister's boyfriend, Tyree Henning,
became violent during an argument. As Orr was assisting her sister in moving car seats into her own vehicle to leave the scene, Henning, who was in the driver's seat of his girlfriend's car, fatally shot Orr in the head. The entire devastating event was captured by the gas station's surveillance cameras. After the shooting, Orr was transported to Methodist Hospital in critical condition, where she later succumbed to her injuries.
Following the shooting, Henning fled the scene in his girlfriend's car, with her one-year-old daughter still inside. He crashed the vehicle a short distance away and attempted to escape on foot but was quickly apprehended by law enforcement. Henning was subsequently charged with murder, kidnapping, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, and leaving the scene of an accident. In September 2021, a jury found Tyree Henning guilty of these charges. He was sentenced to 84.5 years in prison for his crimes, bringing a measure of justice to a case that highlighted the tragic consequences of intimate partner violence.
