In the early morning hours of August 22, 2022, the life of 16-year-old Katrina Strowder, a Black female, was tragically cut short in Indianapolis, Indiana. Around 1:15 a.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 3800 block of Cooper Square Court. There, in the parking lot, they found Katrina unresponsive, suffering from gunshot wounds.
She was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
Katrina was a vibrant teenager with dreams of becoming a cosmetologist. Remembered as a 'daddy's girl,' she was known for her lively spirit and her love for art, cooking, singing, and dancing. Her family and friends described her as a respectful and loving individual who had a special talent for making people smile and forget their troubles. Her sudden and violent death left her family, especially her parents and siblings, utterly devastated. In the wake of the tragedy, the community came together to hold a candlelight vigil and balloon release in her memory at the site of the shooting, a testament to the deep impact she had on those who knew her.
The investigation into Katrina's death began immediately. Homicide detectives quickly identified a person of interest, who was subsequently detained and interviewed. It was revealed that Katrina knew the individual who shot her. However, the suspect was later released pending further investigation, a development that brought more grief to her family who expressed their desire for justice. The police have not publicly disclosed the identity of the person they interviewed.
It is believed that Katrina had left her home at some point during the night without her mother's knowledge. Her mother was reportedly asleep and unaware that her daughter was not in the house.
