In the early morning hours of July 13, 2024, the life of 25-year-old Nakyra La Shawn McGee, a female from Indianapolis, Indiana, was tragically cut short by gun violence. Responding to reports of a shooting at approximately 3:30 a.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers arrived at the 4100 block of Edgemere Court, located on the city's northeast side. There, they discovered Nakyra outside an apartment building, having sustained injuries consistent with a gunshot wound.
She was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Around the same time, a 44-year-old man arrived at Community Hospital East with a non-fatal gunshot wound. Investigators quickly determined that the two incidents were connected, revealing another layer to the tragic events of that morning. The male victim was reported to be in stable condition.
Following the shooting, the investigation led detectives to a person of interest. Through a witness tip, police identified Michael Williams, 33, as the alleged shooter. Williams was located and arrested at a gas station on Arlington. A search of his vehicle uncovered a handgun and marijuana.
Initially, Williams was arrested on charges unrelated to the homicide, including unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon and dealing marijuana. He was held on a $160,000 bond while the homicide investigation continued. During questioning, Williams denied any involvement in Nakyra's death, claiming he was at home at the time of the shooting. At the time of the incident, he was on probation for a weapons charge conviction from the previous year. The investigation into Nakyra's murder remains ongoing, and authorities have encouraged anyone with information to come forward to assist in bringing closure to her case.
