In the fall of 2014, a tragedy unfolded in an Indianapolis apartment complex that ended the life of a young child. Five-year-old DaMoni Troutman, a boy, died on November 9, 2014, after being accidentally shot in the head. The incident occurred in the 1700 block of Century Circle South at the Oakbrook Park apartment complex. At the time of the shooting, DaMoni and his siblings were under the care of their grandmother.
The fatal event happened when DaMoni's nine-year-old half-brother found
a gun inside the home. Unaware of the danger, the older child accidentally discharged the weapon, striking DaMoni. When emergency responders arrived, they found the young boy with a gunshot wound to his head, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Marion County Coroner's Office later ruled his death a homicide.
The firearm involved in the tragic incident belonged to DaMoni's uncle, Richard Sansbury. In the wake of his nephew's death, Sansbury faced legal consequences. On January 21, 2015, he was formally charged with criminal recklessness. At the time of his son's death, DaMoni's father, Donahvon Troutman, was incarcerated on unrelated weapons and drug charges. He was granted a temporary release to attend his son's funeral services.
The family remembered DaMoni as a smart and curious kindergartner who loved the superhero Spiderman. To honor his memory, they released Spiderman balloons at a memorial service. DaMoni's mother, Brittney Rodriguez, expressed that she did not hold anger toward the boys' grandmother or DaMoni's brother, acknowledging their own pain in the aftermath of the devastating accident. The case brought attention to the issue of gun safety and responsible firearm ownership, particularly in homes with children.
