On August 28, 2023, the community of Indianapolis, Indiana, was shaken by the violent death of 27-year-old Emily Lee-Anna Willis. A mother and beloved family member, Willis was walking on the near east side of the city in the 200 block of North Rural Street, near East New York Street, when the incident occurred. Surveillance footage and witness accounts later revealed that she was being pursued by individuals in a gray vehicle.
As she attempted to flee, witnesses heard her screaming for the occupants to leave her alone and calling out for help. Tragically, her plea went unanswered, and a passenger in the vehicle opened fire, striking her approximately 20 times. She was transported to a local hospital in critical condition but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
Investigations by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department utilized license plate readers and security camera footage from nearby businesses to track the suspect vehicle. This digital trail led detectives to identify 34-year-old Deonta Nelson as a primary suspect. Authorities alleged that Nelson and another individual had attempted to lure Willis into their car before chasing her down when she refused. On September 1, 2023, police located and arrested Nelson, charging him with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.
The legal proceedings against Nelson concluded two years later. In September 2025, a jury found him guilty of murder, along with a habitual offender sentencing enhancement. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that Willis had been targeted in what appeared to be an attempted abduction that turned deadly when she resisted. Following the guilty verdict, Nelson returned to court in October 2025 for sentencing. The judge handed down a significant prison term totaling 89 years, ensuring that he would spend the remainder of his life behind bars for the brutal killing of Emily Lee-Anna Willis.
