On the early morning of October 30, 2023, police officers in Indianapolis, Indiana, were dispatched to a reported disturbance on the city's northwest side. The call came in around 1:00 a.m., directing law enforcement to an apartment complex located in the 3000 block of West 39th Street, situated near the intersection of West Kessler Boulevard North Drive and 38th Street.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered a scene of violence where a shooting had taken place in the common areas of the residential community.
The victim of the gunfire was identified as Montrez Cushenberry, a 29-year-old Black male who had sustained critical injuries during the incident. Despite the immediate response of emergency personnel, he was pronounced deceased at the scene, marking another fatal event in the local area that year. Friends and family later memorialized him online, sharing personal tributes that highlighted his connections to the community and the nickname "Yellah" by which he was affectionately known.
Investigators from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department immediately began processing the site for evidence and canvassing for witnesses who might have heard the shots or seen individuals fleeing the area. At the time of the initial reports, authorities did not release information regarding a specific suspect or a motive for the shooting.
