On the evening of September 23, 2023, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to reports of shots fired in the 2500 block of Maywood Road, near South Tibbs and Kentucky avenues, around 10:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered two men with gunshot wounds. One victim, later identified as 30-year-old José "Joey" Angel Hernandez Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene. The other individual was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
