On a tragic Friday in Indianapolis, 18-year-old Bryce Andrew Brown's life was cut short. The young man, born in Terre Haute, passed away on May 26, 2023. He was a graduate of Whites High School in Wabash and a hardworking member of the Operating Engineers Local 841, employed by Poindexter Excavating. When not on the job, he could be found working for his family's business, Brown Brothers Excavating.
Known for his big heart and willingness to help anyone, Bryce was a beloved son, brother,
and friend. He had a passion for sports, including football and basketball, and enjoyed racing go-karts with his brother. He was also an avid bowler. His family remembered him as someone who never met a stranger and left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.
The circumstances of his death unfolded in the 8000 block of East Louisville Way, near 42nd Street and Franklin Road in Lawrence. Bryce was discovered in his car with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. Investigators determined that he had arranged to meet with several individuals at an apartment complex for a transaction.
During the encounter, the suspects allegedly attempted to use counterfeit money and then proceeded to rob Bryce and another passenger in his vehicle. In the course of the robbery, the other passenger was shot and Bryce was killed. Law enforcement utilized social media communications, phone records, and surveillance footage to identify the suspects.
Three teenagers were ultimately arrested and charged in connection with the murder. Derek Reasor, who was 16 at the time of the incident, was convicted of murder, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, armed robbery, and dangerous possession of a firearm following a jury trial. He was sentenced to 57 years in prison. Two other individuals, Quayvon George and Kayjuan Gay, were also sentenced for their roles in the crime. George received a 22-year sentence, and Gay was sentenced to 17 years in the Indiana Department of Correction. Another minor was also implicated in the planned robbery.
