On March 24, 2023, a gathering of friends on the south side of Indianapolis took a tragic turn, resulting in the death of 53-year-old Brian Scott Williams. That afternoon, Williams was at the home of a family friend, Antwone Ervin, located in the 3400 block of South Meridian Street. Along with Ervin's uncle, the men were spending time together, smoking marijuana and watching television.
According to court documents, the atmosphere shifted when Ervin began to feel that things had gotten
'weird.' He later told police that he had not slept for a few days leading up to the incident due to 'intrusive thoughts.' Ervin became agitated by Williams receiving and answering phone calls on speakerphone. At some point, an altercation occurred, with Ervin claiming that Williams had gotten in his face.
The situation escalated to violence when Ervin fatally shot Williams. When officers arrived at the scene around 3 p.m., they found Williams outside the home with a gunshot wound. He was transported to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department homicide detectives quickly identified Antwone Ervin as a person of interest based on witness statements. He was located and arrested for murder the following day. During questioning, Ervin admitted to his unease and the confrontation with Williams but did not state that Williams had threatened or intimidated him, and he confirmed that Williams did not appear to be armed.
In May 2025, a jury convicted Antwone Ervin of the murder of Brian Scott Williams following a three-day trial. Subsequently, a judge sentenced Ervin to 51 years in prison for the shooting. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears commented on the case, stating, 'This was an unnecessarily violent outcome between friends who were just hanging out. The defendant took a life without hesitation that day and will now serve 51 years in prison.'
