In the autumn of 2021, the life of 22-year-old Michael James was tragically cut short in Indianapolis. On the evening of October 12th, an off-duty police officer working security at a construction site made a grim discovery in a grassy area near South Meridian Street and West Hanna Avenue. The bodies of Michael James and two other young men, Abdulla Mubarak, 17, and Joseph Thomas, 18, were found, all having been fatally shot.
The investigation into the triple homicide led authorities to
a 16-year-old suspect, Caden Smith. Investigators were able to identify Smith as a person of interest through communications he had with the victims prior to their deaths. When police executed a search warrant, they took the teenager into custody and discovered what they believed to be the murder weapon inside his home.
In early December 2021, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office announced that Caden Smith would be charged as an adult in the killings. He faced a multitude of charges, including three counts of murder, three counts of felony murder, and three counts of robbery resulting in serious bodily injury. Additional charges included dangerous possession of a machine gun, dangerous possession of a firearm, possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana, and resisting law enforcement. A jury later convicted the suspect, who was 19 at the time of conviction, for the murders of the three young men.
