In the summer of 2021, the life of 18-year-old Malik Jamal Golden, an African American male, was cut tragically short in Hinesville, Georgia. On the evening of July 31st, Golden was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds at the Harbor Rain apartment complex on Saunders Avenue. He was not a resident of the complex. Golden was initially transported to Liberty Regional Medical Center and later transferred to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Hinesville Police Department swiftly launched an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts led to the identification of three suspects. On August 9, 2021, investigators arrested 19-year-old Jeremiah Traylor. The following day, with the assistance of the U.S. Marshal Service, 20-year-old Morieo Austin was apprehended in Garden City. The third suspect, 18-year-old Naiseam Ward of Savannah, was arrested on August 23, 2021, by the Southeast Fugitive Task Force.
In June 2022, a grand jury indicted Austin, Traylor, and Ward for the murder of Malik Golden. The subsequent legal proceedings brought a measure of closure to the case. Morieo Austin was found guilty of malice murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. Jeremiah Traylor entered a guilty plea to a reduced charge of voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison followed by 20 years of probation for criminal attempt to commit armed robbery. Naiseam Ward pleaded guilty to one count of armed robbery and received a sentence of 15 years in prison and five years of probation.
