On a tragic Wednesday afternoon, August 25, 2021, the life of 24-year-old Janarick Maleek Reed, an African American male, was cut short in Hinesville, Georgia. Reed was driving through the parking lot of a convenience store at the intersection of E.G. Miles Parkway and Palm Drive shortly after 2 p.m. when he was shot. He was rushed to Liberty Regional Medical Center but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
The Hinesville Police Department swiftly launched an investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led them to identify several individuals they believed to be involved. Initially, they sought 18-year-old Stephon Markel Whitaker and 17-year-old Donnell Bernard Mention as persons of interest. Mention later turned himself in to the authorities. The investigation suggested that the fatal encounter occurred during a drug transaction where the suspects intended to rob Reed of marijuana. It was also alleged that the individuals involved were associated with the 'Hopout on You' gang.
In June 2022, a grand jury handed down indictments against Whitaker, Mention, and a third suspect, Dadreion Lashawn Ceasar. The trio faced serious charges, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and violations of the street gang terrorism and prevention act. The case proceeded to an eight-day trial in Liberty County Superior Court, culminating in a verdict in July 2024.
The jury found Dadreion Lashawn Ceasar and Donnell Bernard Mention guilty of voluntary manslaughter and felony murder. They were, however, found not guilty of malice murder. Both Ceasar and Mention were also convicted of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and violations of the street gang terrorism and prevention act. Stephon Whitaker was acquitted of the most severe charges, including three counts of murder and one count of aggravated assault. He was, however, found guilty of two counts of criminal attempt to commit a felony and two counts of street gang activity. Sentencing for all three convicted individuals was scheduled for August 12, 2024.
