In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Tacoma, Washington, the life of a young man was tragically cut short. Charles "Chucky" Williams, a 19-year-old Black / African American male from nearby University Place, had been at a memorial party at a dance hall. At approximately 1:25 a.m. on March 23, 2014, just after leaving the event, he found himself in the midst of a large altercation at the intersection of 6th Avenue and Fife Street.
The chaotic scene, with over 30 people present, took
a fatal turn when an unidentified individual involved in the fight brandished a handgun. Multiple shots were fired, and Charles was struck in the back. The shooter, described as a Black male in his late teens or early 20s with a heavy build and hair styled in short dreadlocks or curls, was wearing jean shorts and a black t-shirt with red and white lettering on the front. In the confusion and aftermath of the shooting, the suspect managed to flee and has not been identified since.
Despite the number of potential witnesses, Tacoma Police detectives have been met with challenges in their investigation. The case remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Charles Williams. Authorities have continued to appeal to the public for any information that could lead to the identification and apprehension of the person responsible for his death. Crime Stoppers of Tacoma/Pierce County has offered a reward for information leading to an arrest and charges in the case, hoping to bring a measure of justice and closure to the family and friends of the young man whose life was so abruptly taken.
