On the night of March 18, 2020, Raymond Martine Serrano, a 36-year-old male, was walking with a friend in the 300 block of East 26th Street in Tacoma, Washington. At approximately 11:24 p.m., a dark-colored sedan passed by, and an occupant of the vehicle shouted at Serrano to get out of the street. After Serrano's friend responded, the car made a U-turn and drove past them again. It was then that a shot was fired from the vehicle, striking Serrano.
Officers who arrived at the scene found him unresponsive and performed CPR until medics arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide led Tacoma police to three suspects. In April 2020, authorities arrested a 20-year-old male, an 18-year-old male, and a 19-year-old female in connection with the drive-by shooting. They were booked on suspicion of second-degree murder and drive-by shooting. At the time of his death, it was reported that Serrano was a convicted child molester and was wanted for escaping community custody.
Ultimately, three individuals were sentenced for their roles in Serrano's death. Marcus Moore, who was believed to have fired the fatal shot, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 15 years and six months in prison. Dustin Lee Smith, convicted as an accomplice, also pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a sentence of 10 years and three months. The driver of the vehicle, Aida Leito, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and drive-by shooting and was sentenced to 813 days.
