On August 19, 2024, emergency responders in Indianapolis, Indiana, were dispatched to a reported shooting on the city's near west side. The incident occurred shortly before 2:00 p.m. in the 3600 block of West Michigan Street, near the intersection with Tibbs Avenue. Upon arrival, police discovered Nathaniel Lee Thomas, a 21-year-old male, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
He was a resident of Indianapolis and worked as a mechanic and salesman, known to his family and friends for the pride he took in his vehicle.
The violence that claimed Thomas's life was part of a broader, chaotic sequence of events that afternoon which investigators believe to be connected. Around the same time as the shooting on West Michigan Street, another man was found shot to death in the 4100 block of West Vermont Street. The second victim was identified as 40-year-old Brandon Lerez Groves. A third male victim was also discovered in the vicinity, suffering from critical injuries, and was transported to a local hospital for urgent medical treatment. Police described the scene as a 'triple shooting' spanning multiple locations within the neighborhood.
As of late 2024, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department had not announced any arrests in connection with the deaths of Thomas or Groves. Homicide detectives continued to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shootings, seeking to determine the motive and identify the individuals responsible. Nathaniel Thomas was remembered by his community as a vibrant individual who had attended local schools and maintained close ties with his family. He was survived by his parents, John and Domonique Thomas, as well as seven brothers and numerous friends. His funeral services were held later that month at Family Funeral Care in Indianapolis, followed by his burial at Floral Park Cemetery.
