On a November evening in Danville, Virginia, a dispute between two men escalated to a fatal conclusion, leaving one man dead and the other facing serious charges. The life of Clarence James Martin Jr., a 50-year-old male, was cut short on November 17, 2021, in front of a residence in the 100 block of Rocklawn Avenue. Responding to calls of shots fired, police discovered Martin with a gunshot wound.
He was transported to SOVAH Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Martin's death quickly focused on 43-year-old Khaleel Latwain Rodgers of Ringgold, Virginia. In a turn of events, Rodgers had also sustained a gunshot wound during the altercation and had sought treatment at the same medical center. Evidence from the scene indicated that the two men had been involved in an argument that led to both drawing firearms. It was reported that Martin had fired his weapon first, wounding Rodgers, who then returned fire, fatally injuring Martin. The incident was not considered a random act by law enforcement.
Following the investigation, a Danville Grand Jury indicted Khaleel Latwain Rodgers on charges of first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Rodgers turned himself in to the authorities on January 13, 2022, after recovering from his injuries.
When the case went to trial, the initial charge of first-degree murder was not the final verdict. In October 2022, a jury found Khaleel Latwain Rodgers guilty of the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter. In February 2023, he was sentenced for his role in Clarence James Martin Jr.'s death. Rodgers received a total active prison sentence of nine years. This sentence comprised ten years with four years suspended for involuntary manslaughter and five years with two years suspended for the weapons charge.
