Jamell I.B. Moody, a 32-year-old Black man from Decatur, Georgia, was killed the night of January 18, 2023, after what began as an ordinary trip outside to his car turned into a deadly confrontation. Investigators said the violence unfolded around 10:30 p.m. on Shepherds Path, where Moody encountered people who were allegedly breaking into vehicles. Police said an argument or fight followed, and gunfire erupted.
Moody was found shot and, according to local reporting, died while being taken to the hospital.
The shooting scene quickly widened beyond the place where Moody fell. Officers were also called to a Waffle House parking lot on Flat Shoals Parkway, where a 15-year-old had been found shot. DeKalb County police said the two scenes were connected, reinforcing the picture of a chaotic encounter that spilled from a neighborhood confrontation into a second location. Early reporting said the wounded teenager was in critical condition, and police believed he was one of the people involved in the car break-ins that set the confrontation in motion.
