Arthur Archie Eversole, a 37-year-old male, was discovered with a gunshot wound at a Chevron gas station on Snapfinger Woods Drive in Decatur, Georgia, on March 25, 2022. He had been shot in the jaw. Eversole was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries on April 3, 2022. The shooting did not occur at the gas station, but rather at a nearby home on Golf Vista Circle where his brother, Alexander Kraus, was located.
The investigation into the shooting quickly focused
on Eversole's brother. Kraus was taken into custody at the residence where the shooting occurred. Initially, he was charged with aggravated assault. However, following Eversole's death, the charges against Kraus were upgraded to murder. Evidence presented by prosecutors indicated a violent struggle had taken place in Eversole's bedroom, with a damaged lock and door. It was alleged that Eversole was shot with a. 357 pistol while he was sleeping.
Despite the charges, some close to the brothers contested the narrative of a malicious act. Eversole's manager, John Williams, stated that any past issues between the brothers had been resolved and described the shooting as an accident. Their mother also expressed her belief in Kraus's innocence, stating that there had been no arguments or feuds between her sons. Conversely, the DeKalb District Attorney's Office pointed to a history of violence between the two, noting that Eversole had an open case of battery and disorderly conduct where Kraus was the victim.
Alexander Kraus was denied bond in April 2022, with the judge citing him as a flight risk and a danger to the community. In April 2023, a DeKalb County grand jury indicted Kraus on charges of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
