In the early morning hours of August 23, 2018, a tragic incident unfolded on Interstate 285 in Decatur, Georgia, leading to the death of 41-year-old Mario Washington. Washington, a male, was behind the wheel of his vehicle, accompanied by his wife and two other individuals, including a friend and co-worker named Cedric Martin. The group was reportedly returning after picking up Washington's wife from her job at around 3 a.m.
The fatal event occurred when Martin, who was seated in the
back seat directly behind Washington, was handling a firearm he had recently acquired. The gun discharged, sending a single bullet through the driver's seat and striking Washington in the upper body. Despite his critical injury, Washington was able to safely pull the car over to the shoulder of the highway, preventing any further accidents. He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. His wife, who was in the front passenger seat, suffered a panic attack and was also taken to the hospital.
Following an investigation into the shooting, law enforcement determined that the discharge of the weapon was accidental and not intentional. Based on interviews with the other passengers and evidence found in the vehicle, authorities concluded that Martin had been carelessly playing with the gun when it fired. As a result, Cedric Martin, who was 29 at the time, was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. He was taken into custody and a judge later set his bond at $45,000. Friends and co-workers at a local Waffle House, where both Washington and Martin were employed, mourned the loss of Washington, who was described as a father of 13.
