In the waning hours of a Thursday afternoon, the life of a young DeKalb County police officer, Edgar Isidro Flores, was tragically cut short. On December 13, 2018, the 24-year-old male officer, who was of Latino heritage, was conducting a traffic stop near the intersection of Candler and Tilson Roads in Decatur, Georgia. What began as a routine procedure quickly escalated into a fatal encounter that would leave two men dead and a community in mourning.
The suspect, identified as
33-year-old Brandon Taylor of Decatur, fled from his vehicle on foot, prompting Officer Flores to give chase. During the pursuit, Taylor produced a handgun and fired at the officer, inflicting a mortal wound. Responding officers, including a K-9 unit, tracked Taylor to a hiding spot behind a nearby business. As they closed in, Taylor shot the police dog before being shot and killed by the other officers on the scene. Both Officer Flores and Taylor were transported to an Atlanta area hospital where they were pronounced dead. The injured K-9, named Indi, survived after receiving veterinary care but lost an eye.
Edgar Isidro Flores had been with the DeKalb County Police Department for just over a year and a half, having graduated from the police academy in November of the previous year. He was engaged to be married and would have celebrated his 25th birthday just days after his death. His passing was mourned by his family, fiancée, and the wider law enforcement community. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to investigate the officer-involved shooting, as is standard procedure. In the aftermath, there were no arrests to be made in connection with Officer Flores's death as the sole suspect was killed at the scene, bringing a violent and somber end to the brief but dedicated career of a young officer.
