Thirty-one-year-old Eggene Cofield was at the Dr. Red Auto Paint and Body Shop on Covington Highway on October 4, 2022, where he had a conversation with Robert Moon, a 60-year-old man at the establishment, about fixing the tint on his vehicle. The seemingly minor disagreement took a tragic turn, ending Cofield's life and leading to a murder charge for Moon.
According to the account Moon provided to law enforcement, the incident began when he told Cofield he would address the window tint issue after completing another job. Moon alleged that Cofield then went to his car and returned with a long rifle. He claimed that Cofield struck him with the butt of the weapon and then tried to flee the scene. It was at this point that Moon, stating he acted in self-defense, fired his own gun.
The single shot struck Eggene Cofield in the back as he was running away. After being hit, Cofield managed to run back into the auto shop, where he collapsed on the floor. Police officers arrived to find him there, and he was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
