In the summer of 2022, the life of 19-year-old Quakari Bryant Johnathan Freeman, an African American male, was tragically cut short in Decatur, Georgia. On the evening of July 1st, DeKalb County Police responded to a call at the Avondale Townhomes on Holcombe Road. There, they discovered Freeman's body in the parking lot, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the back.
Near his body, investigators found two 9mm shell casings, evidence of the violence that had just occurred.
The initial investigation quickly pointed to a suspect, thanks to information provided by a woman who identified herself as Freeman's girlfriend. This led the police to identify 25-year-old Rakwon Sadek Brooks as the primary suspect in Freeman's murder. A warrant for his arrest on a murder charge was issued, and the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Unit began their search, cautioning the public that Brooks was likely armed and dangerous. It is believed that a verbal dispute between Brooks and Freeman preceded the deadly shooting.
For over a year and a half, Brooks remained at large. The search for him continued until January 19, 2026, when Atlanta Police responded to a domestic dispute call. The suspect in that incident, who was armed, was identified as Rakwon Brooks. During his arrest, a struggle ensued, and a firearm he was carrying discharged, grazing a police officer's leg. The officer's injuries were not life-threatening. Following this incident, it was confirmed that Brooks had outstanding warrants for the murder of Quakari Freeman.
After his capture, Rakwon Sadek Brooks, then 28, was taken into custody and booked into the Fulton County Jail. He now faces a multitude of charges in two counties. In Fulton County, his charges include aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, simple battery-family violence, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and obstruction. In DeKalb County, he faces charges of murder, battery, and domestic violence for the death of Quakari Bryant Johnathan Freeman.
