On a late evening in Decatur, Georgia, a birthday celebration took a tragic and fatal turn, ending the life of 20-year-old Joshua Quaintance. The male victim had arrived with his sister and friends at a short-term rental on Hillside Avenue on March 12, 2023, just as the party was winding down. A seemingly innocuous comment he made over the phone, in which he referred to the people at the house as 'green,' a slang term for inexperienced or naive, was overheard and set off a chain of violent
events.
A woman at the party took offense to the remark and physically confronted Quaintance in the driveway of the residence. The situation quickly escalated when several men, including the host of the party, 21-year-old Brian Garfield Fort, emerged from the house brandishing firearms. Surveillance footage from the home captured portions of the heated confrontation. Though Quaintance attempted to de-escalate the situation by walking away to his car, Fort pursued him down the street. Moments later, the sound of multiple gunshots pierced the night. Quaintance's sister discovered her brother lying wounded in the street; she and her friends rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after 1 a.m.
Investigators from the DeKalb County Police Department utilized social media posts and surveillance video to identify Fort, who was celebrating his birthday, as the shooter. In his statement to police, Fort admitted to hosting the party and bringing a gun outside during the fight. He claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that Quaintance had pulled a gun. However, police found no weapon on or near Quaintance. Fort was later arrested in June 2023 after an employee at a restaurant reported him for leaving without paying for his food, an incident which led police to discover his connection to the homicide.
The DeKalb County District Attorney's Office prosecuted the case, and a jury convicted Brian Garfield Fort on charges of felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The jury rejected his self-defense claim. Immediately following the guilty verdict, a judge sentenced Fort to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional five years.
