In a tragic and senseless act of violence, 22-year-old Cedric Williams, a Black male from Decatur, Georgia, was shot and killed in what police described as a road rage incident. The fatal encounter occurred late on a Wednesday night in December 2017. Williams was a young father, leaving behind a 22-month-old son. His family described him as a caring person and a wonderful father, and his sudden death left them devastated.
The incident began when Williams, who was driving with two female
passengers, reportedly cut off another vehicle while making a turn at the intersection of Memorial Drive and Columbia Drive in Decatur. The driver of the other car, angered by the maneuver, pulled up alongside Williams' vehicle and opened fire. Williams was struck by the gunfire, and his car, now without a driver, veered off the road. The vehicle crashed into a nearby house, causing significant damage to the property but miraculously not injuring anyone inside.
The two passengers in Williams' car, a 20-year-old woman and a 39-year-old woman, were unharmed in the crash. They were, however, left to witness the immediate and tragic aftermath of the shooting. Emergency services were called to the scene, but Williams was pronounced dead from his injuries. The passengers, whose names were not released by the authorities for their safety, were understandably shaken by the ordeal.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, DeKalb County police launched an investigation to find the person responsible for Cedric Williams' death. The suspect was described as a Black male, possibly with dreadlocks, who was driving a dark-colored SUV, potentially a Mercury Mountaineer. Despite canvassing the area for witnesses and surveillance footage, and pleas from Williams' grieving family for the perpetrator to come forward, no immediate arrests were made in the days following the incident. The case highlighted the dangers of road rage and the devastating consequences of a momentary loss of temper on the road. As of the last available reports, the gunman remained at large, and the investigation into the death of Cedric Williams was ongoing.
