In the late hours of a Friday night, the life of 28-year-old Corey Jackson Jr. was tragically cut short in what police believe was a robbery turned homicide. On August 31, 2024, after finishing his shift at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, where he had been a dedicated employee for a decade, Jackson took the MARTA bus home, a routine he followed daily. Shortly after getting off the bus around 2 a.m.
on Catalina Drive in DeKalb County, just a short distance from the home he shared with his grandfather, he was shot and killed.
A passerby discovered Jackson's body lying in the street and immediately alerted the authorities. When police arrived at the scene, they found Jackson with gunshot wounds to both of his thighs. He was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Investigators believe robbery was the motive, as several of Jackson's personal belongings, including his phone, book bag, work clothes, and jewelry, were missing from the scene.
Corey Jackson Jr. was remembered by his family as a kind-hearted and humble young man who was deeply loved. His mother, Queshon Walker, described him as a 'good man' who loved going to church with his family every Sunday. He was known for his bright smile and his powerful singing voice. In the wake of his death, his family and friends held a balloon release in his memory, grieving the loss of a valuable person in their lives.
As of now, the case remains unsolved, and no suspects have been identified or arrested in connection with the murder of Corey Jackson Jr. DeKalb County police are continuing their investigation and were seeking to obtain surveillance footage from the MARTA bus in hopes of identifying those responsible for this senseless act of violence. His family continues to wait for answers, holding onto the promise from his sister, Jamaria Walker, that she is determined to find out who took her brother's life.
