In the early hours of October 9, 2022, in DeKalb County, Georgia, the life of two-year-old Sekani Brunson was tragically cut short. The young male was sleeping in bed with his father, 23-year-old Tyquontae Brunson, when a gun kept under the father's pillow discharged, striking the child in the head.
According to Tyquontae Brunson's account to the police, he did not hear the gunshot but was awakened by his son's labored breathing. Upon discovering his son's grave injury, he rushed the toddler to a local hospital in his work van rather than waiting for an ambulance. Medical staff at Emory Decatur Hospital administered emergency care, but the child could not be saved.
Following an investigation into the circumstances of the shooting, Tyquontae Brunson was arrested. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to children. In August 2024, the DeKalb County District Attorney announced that a grand jury had indicted Tyquontae Brunson on these charges. The case highlighted a concerning trend of child fatalities resulting from unsecured firearms, as noted by the District Attorney's office.
