In the late evening hours of June 22, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the night at a gas station in Decatur, Georgia, leaving a scene of chaos and tragedy. When the shooting stopped, 27-year-old Marvin Leo Jackson Jr., a male, was dead, another man was killed, and two others were wounded. The popular gathering spot at the corner of Glenwood and Austin had turned into a crime scene, with more than 50 shots fired from at least four different weapons.
Witnesses and police reports pieced
together the harrowing sequence of events. A group of men, including Jackson, were gathered in front of the Exxon gas station when a 59-year-old man named Charles Hickman approached them. Without warning, Hickman opened fire, fatally wounding Jackson. As Hickman attempted to flee, others in Jackson's group returned fire. In the ensuing exchange, Hickman was shot and killed.
The hail of bullets also struck two other men, one in his late 20s and another in his early 30s. Both were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A black car parked at the gas station was riddled with bullet holes, a silent testament to the intensity of the violence.
Investigators with the DeKalb County Police Department determined that the individuals who fired back at Hickman did so in self-defense, and as a result, no charges were filed against them in connection with the incident. The motive for Hickman's initial attack on Marvin Leo Jackson Jr. remains unclear. The investigation into the double fatality concluded with the death of the instigator, leaving a community to mourn the lives lost in a sudden and senseless act of violence.
