In the pre-dawn hours of a Wednesday in Decatur, Georgia, a simple act of compassion tragically cut short the life of 36-year-old Demario Kentrell Parrish. On July 13, 2022, at approximately 2:30 a.m., Parrish was at a Chevron gas station on the 2400 block of Candler Road when he witnessed a heated argument between a man and a woman in a car parked at the gas pumps. Believing the woman was in physical danger, Parrish chose to intervene in an attempt to de-escalate the situation.

His intervention, however, was met with violence. The man involved in the dispute, later identified as 25-year-old Jimmy Holmes of Decatur, allegedly shot Parrish twice. The father of three died at the scene from his injuries. Family members remember Parrish as a loving and protective individual, whose instinct to help others was a defining characteristic. His death, an act of a good Samaritan, sent shockwaves through his community and left his family devastated by the sudden and senseless loss.

The investigation into the fatal shooting moved swiftly. Less than a month after the incident, on August 11, 2022, the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Unit, with assistance from the DeKalb County Police Department K9 Unit, located and arrested Jimmy Holmes at the Candler Forest Apartments. Holmes was taken into custody and subsequently charged with Aggravated Assault and Murder for his alleged role in the death of Demario Kentrell Parrish. He was then transported to the DeKalb County Jail.
