On a January evening in 2017, a young man's life was cut short in a tragic and deceptive act of violence. Daryl Deshawn Phillips, a 21-year-old male, was fatally shot in Decatur, Georgia, in an incident that initially appeared to be a random act of violence witnessed by two acquaintances.
The events of January 13th unfolded near a Kroger on Wesley Chapel Road.
Chalante Thomas, 21, and Demario Cotton, 28, initially presented themselves as concerned friends who had come to the aid of a shooting victim. They told police they were waiting for Phillips when they heard gunshots and he came running, stating he had been shot. According to their account, they helped him into their car and drove to a nearby Dunkin' Donuts parking lot, where they called for help. When authorities arrived, they found Phillips dying in the vehicle. He had been shot multiple times in the back.
However, the narrative provided by Thomas and Cotton quickly unraveled as investigators delved deeper. Security camera footage from a nearby McDonald's captured the true nature of the encounter, contradicting the story of a chance shooting. The investigation revealed that the incident was not a random attack, but rather an armed robbery. Authorities allege that Thomas and Cotton were involved in a plan to steal more than an ounce of marijuana from Phillips.
Based on the evidence gathered, both Chalante Thomas and Demario Cotton were subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Daryl Deshawn Phillips. In addition to the murder charges, they also faced charges of armed robbery. The very individuals who had portrayed themselves as witnesses to a tragedy were now accused of orchestrating it. Thomas was taken into custody and held without bond.
