In the late hours of October 25, 2022, a night of work turned fatal for 30-year-old Erik McKenzie at the Cosmopolitan Premier Lounge on Glenwood Road in Decatur, Georgia. McKenzie, a male security guard at the nightclub, was shot and killed while on duty. The incident also left another security guard injured.

The events of that tragic night began to unfold when a dispute erupted inside the club, prompting security to escort the individuals involved out of the establishment. As the altercation moved to the parking lot, gunfire rang out. In the ensuing chaos, both McKenzie and his colleague were struck by bullets. When law enforcement arrived at the scene, they found numerous shell casings scattered from the front door to the back of the parking lot, indicating the scale of the violence that had transpired. McKenzie succumbed to his injuries, his life cut short while trying to maintain peace.

In the weeks that followed, investigators worked to identify and apprehend those responsible for McKenzie's death. Their efforts led to the arrest of 26-year-old Quincy Tyler Walker in November. He was subsequently charged with felony murder and two counts of aggravated assault. The investigation continued, and a second suspect, 23-year-old Dion Watkins, was arrested in February of the following year. He faces the same charges of murder and aggravated assault. Both men were taken into custody and are being held at the DeKalb County Jail.

Family members of Erik McKenzie described the time following his death as incredibly difficult as they struggled to process the sudden and violent loss of their loved one.
