In the heat of a Fourth of July in 2016, a senseless argument over a parking space at a gas station in Decatur, Georgia, escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 38-year-old Timothy Hill, a male who was a father of three. The incident, which unfolded in a matter of moments, left a family grieving and a community in shock.
What began as a trivial dispute quickly turned fatal. Hill and his brother had stopped at a Chevron gas station on Flat Shoals Road.
An argument erupted with another man, later identified as Aquillous Rayon Henderson, over a parking spot. According to witnesses, Hill attempted to de-escalate the situation and walked into the convenience store. However, the conflict continued between Hill's brother and Henderson.
In a brazen act of violence, Henderson followed Hill into the store and shot him. Hill was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries. The entire harrowing event was captured on the gas station's surveillance video, providing crucial evidence for investigators.
Following the shooting, authorities launched a search for the gunman. Based on witness statements and the video footage, they identified Aquillous Henderson as the primary suspect. He was subsequently apprehended and charged with the murder of Timothy Hill.
Henderson stood trial for his actions. In 2018, a DeKalb County jury found him guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. During the trial, Henderson claimed he acted in self-defense, a claim the jury ultimately rejected. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional five years to be served consecutively for the firearms charge. Henderson later appealed his conviction, but in February 2021, the Supreme Court of Georgia upheld the jury's verdict, ensuring that he would remain behind bars for the killing of Timothy Hill.
