In the quiet afternoon of May 5, 2018, in a home on Sweetgum Lane in Decatur, Georgia, the life of six-year-old Z’Mari Mitchell was irrevocably altered. A dispute that began over a social media post, involving his older sister, escalated with unimaginable speed and violence. A group of girls, driven by then 17-year-old Meshon Williams, arrived at the Mitchell residence intending to confront the sister. The verbal altercation quickly turned into a physical fight in the front yard, which was subsequently broken up by Z'Mari's parents. As the group began to leave, the situation took a deadly turn.
After the initial confrontation appeared to have ended, Williams stopped the car, stepped out, and fired a handgun towards the house an astonishing 31 times. Inside, Z'Mari was playing in his living room, a space that should have been his sanctuary. Of the numerous bullets fired, only two struck the home, but one of them found its way to the young boy, striking him in the head. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where he fought for his life for four days before succumbing to his injuries on May 9, 2018.
The senseless act of violence sparked an intense manhunt for Meshon Williams. Authorities located him five days after the shooting. The attempt to apprehend him resulted in a high-speed chase which ended with Williams crashing his vehicle and attempting to flee on foot. He was ultimately found by a K-9 unit hiding in some bushes and was taken into custody. It was later revealed that just two days prior to the fatal shooting, Williams had been involved in another incident where he rammed a police car multiple times while fleeing in a stolen vehicle.
In December 2019, Meshon Williams, then 18, pleaded guilty to a string of charges related to the events that transpired. These charges included Felony Murder, eight counts of Aggravated Assault, Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer, and Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony. For his actions that led to the death of young Z’Mari Mitchell, Williams was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole, plus an additional five years on probation.
