Fadson Excellent, a 29-year-old Black male, tragically lost his life on November 28, 2019, in West Palm Beach, Florida. The incident occurred in the early hours of Thanksgiving Day outside the Rose Gentleman's Club, located at 4458 Purdy Lane. According to reports, Fadson Excellent was involved in a confrontation in the club's parking lot, which escalated into a fatal shooting.
Surveillance footage from the club captured the events leading to his death, showing Antoine Donta Newton, then 36 years old, as the shooter. Newton was later arrested at Delray Medical Center, where he had gone to check on one of the men injured in the shooting.
The legal proceedings following the incident were complex and drawn out. Newton faced charges of first-degree murder for the death of Fadson Excellent and attempted first-degree murder for the shooting of another man, Ernest Taylor, who was also injured during the altercation. However, the jury was unable to reach a consensus on the first-degree murder charge, resulting in a mistrial. Newton was found guilty of the lesser charge of aggravated battery in relation to Taylor's shooting.
Throughout the trial, Newton's defense argued that he acted in self-defense. They claimed that the altercation began when Excellent and Taylor started kicking and punching Newton's friend, Bataskia Marzette, after an exchange of words while exiting the club. Newton's attorneys sought to have all charges dismissed under Florida's "stand your ground" law, asserting that Newton was defending himself and his friend. Despite these arguments, the court did not dismiss the charges, leading to the partial verdict and subsequent legal proceedings.
The case remains unresolved regarding the first-degree murder charge, with the possibility of further legal action. The tragic death of Fadson Excellent highlights the complexities and challenges of the legal system in addressing violent crimes and ensuring justice for the victims and their families.
