In the late hours of a Tuesday night in Americus, Georgia, a domestic dispute escalated into a fatal exchange of gunfire, leaving two men dead. On May 24, 2023, police were called to an apartment on Country Club Drive around 10:25 p.m. following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered two men who had sustained gunshot wounds.
One of the men, 24-year-old Michael Darnell Atkins-Merritt, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other man, identified as 26-year-old Je'Kwan Jamal Cobb, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment but ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Investigators determined that the two men had shot at each other during the course of their altercation.
The Americus Police Department, with the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, conducted the investigation into the double homicide. His death has left behind a young daughter and a grieving family. Funeral services were held for him on June 3, 2023, at Whole Truth International Ministries in Americus.
