In the autumn of 2017, the life of a young man, Tracy Harvey Johnson, was tragically cut short in Americus, Georgia. On October 18th, the 21-year-old male was killed at a residence on McGarrah Street, prompting an investigation by the Americus Police Department and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The inquiry into his death would uncover connections to criminal street gang activity and lead to a significant indictment.
Within days of the incident, investigators honed in on a suspect. Evidence gathered by the Americus Police Department and GBI agents pointed to Riyod Reddick, a 24-year-old from Albany, Georgia. An arrest warrant was secured, and on October 26, 2017, Reddick was taken into custody in Warner Robins by the U.S. Marshals' Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force, assisting both the APD and GBI. He was subsequently charged with the murder of Tracy Harvey Johnson.
As the investigation continued to unfold, a deeper and more complex narrative emerged. Authorities determined that Johnson's murder was not an isolated act of violence but was associated with criminal street gang activity. This new evidence was presented to the Southwestern Judicial Circuit District Attorney, Lewis Lamb. Under his direction, the case was brought before a Sumter County Grand Jury.
In February 2018, Riyod Reddick was initially indicted by the grand jury. However, the ongoing investigation into the gang-related aspects of the case led to a more comprehensive set of charges. In December 2019, a Sumter County Grand Jury returned a true bill of indictment against Reddick for 15 counts of Violation of the Street Gang Terrorism and Prevention Act, one count of Malice Murder, two counts of Felony Murder, one count of Aggravated Assault, one count of Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Reddick is currently in the custody of the Georgia Department of Corrections as the case proceeds through the judicial system under the prosecution of the Southwestern Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office.
