In the late hours of a Wednesday evening in Americus, Georgia, the life of 32-year-old Jarvis Willis was tragically cut short. On that night, between 11:30 and 11:45 p.m., Willis's body was discovered in the roadway of the Greystone mobile home park on Mask Road. It was determined that he had been shot and killed after apparently walking into the middle of an ongoing shooting.
The investigation into the death of the male victim, a resident of 102 Sandstone Drive in Americus, quickly led to the identification of several suspects. Within days, a father and son, 38-year-old Christopher Shane Hale and 18-year-old Christopher Shane Hale Jr., turned themselves in to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office. Both men, who lived on Mask Road a short distance from where Willis's body was found, were charged with aggravated assault and felony murder.
Further investigation by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation led to more arrests. An 18-year-old named Jaylen T. Leverette and an unnamed 16-year-old male, both from Americus, were also taken into custody and faced charges of felony murder and aggravated assault. Investigators believe Leverette and the juvenile were shooting from a vehicle into a residence at 745 Mask Road.
Authorities recovered dozens of shell casings from the scene, indicating a significant exchange of gunfire. It is believed that Willis, who was not the intended target, was an innocent bystander caught in the deadly crossfire. All four suspects were incarcerated following their arrests, with bond being denied for the Hales.
