In the quiet, rural landscape of eastern Sumter County, Georgia, a grim discovery was made on the evening of February 27, 2015. Firefighters, responding to a house fire on R.W. Jones Road, entered the residence to find the bodies of 33-year-old Dallas Freeman and his mother, 54-year-old Bonnie Freeman. It was immediately apparent that this was no ordinary fire. The first responders noticed that both victims had sustained gunshot wounds, prompting them to alert law enforcement and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
The subsequent investigation revealed a brutal and calculated crime. Authorities determined that Dallas Freeman was likely already deceased when his mother arrived at the home she shared with him. It is believed that Bonnie Freeman interrupted a robbery in progress. Both mother and son had been shot multiple times outside the residence before their bodies were dragged back inside. The perpetrators then set the house ablaze in a failed attempt to conceal the double homicide. The investigation uncovered that a gun safe belonging to Dallas Freeman was the primary target of the robbery. Although the safe was stolen, the thieves were unable to open it. Other stolen items, including a television, tools, and Dallas Freeman's pickup truck, were later recovered by law enforcement.
The investigation, a collaborative effort between the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the State Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Americus Police Department, soon led to a series of arrests. The crime was believed to be gang-related. One of the first to be charged was 17-year-old Ruhemmeion King, who faced two counts of felony murder, aggravated assault, and arson. As the case unfolded, more individuals were implicated. Demetrious Hubbard was also charged with murder. Several others were arrested on related charges, including Reginald Mathis, Brandon Prince, and Qwinterrious Dodson, who faced accusations ranging from theft by receiving stolen property to making false statements. Mathis and Dodson also faced charges for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
In January 2017, Ruhemmeion King pleaded guilty to two counts of felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault, first-degree burglary, first-degree arson, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was sentenced to serve two consecutive life sentences plus an additional 50 years. Another co-defendant, Demarcus Brown, was scheduled to stand trial for his alleged involvement in the crimes. The investigation suggested that as many as ten individuals could ultimately be arrested in connection with the tragic deaths of Dallas and Bonnie Freeman.
