In the late afternoon of a Saturday in Americus, Georgia, the life of David Joshua Mitchell, a 26-year-old male, was abruptly cut short. On January 23, 2021, at approximately 2:19 PM, officers and emergency personnel were dispatched to the parking lot of a shopping center located in the 1400 block of East Forsyth Street, near the Belk department store. There, they discovered Mitchell in the front seat of his vehicle, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.
David Joshua Mitchell, known affectionately as “Lil Dave” and “Fish” to his family, was a United States Army veteran born in Americus on October 31, 1994. A 2013 graduate of Sumter County High School, he later attended South Georgia Technical College. Remembered for his outgoing spirit, he was a dedicated son, father, and brother.
The investigation into the shooting was swiftly undertaken by the Americus Police Department with the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The day of the shooting, a suspect was identified as 22-year-old Jaron Sharod Griffin of Americus. By Monday, January 25, 2021, Griffin had been arrested. He was subsequently charged with one count of Felony Murder and one count of Aggravated Assault in connection with David Joshua Mitchell's death. The investigation was ongoing following the arrest.
