On a late Wednesday evening in Americus, Georgia, the life of 37-year-old Christopher York was tragically cut short. On December 21, 2022, at approximately 11:30 p.m., a shooting incident occurred at a residence on Dogwood Drive. York was shot and subsequently transported to Phoebe Sumter Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The Sumter County Sheriff's Office promptly requested the assistance of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to delve into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
The investigation led by the GBI soon identified two local men in connection with Christopher York's death. Thomas Warren Capps, 40, and Nickalus Lee Cochran, 25, both of Americus, were arrested. Capps faced a litany of serious charges, including Felony Murder, Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon. Cochran was charged with Tampering with Evidence, suggesting an attempt to conceal or alter facts related to the case.
The legal process moved forward, and in February 2025, a Sumter County jury found Thomas Warren Capps guilty on charges of murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony for his role in the death of Christopher York. Following the conviction, the presiding judge sentenced Capps to life in prison with the possibility of parole, with an additional five years to be served.
